Pitigliano

Pitigliano

Positioned on a cliff of tuft rock, from which you can see some of the most splendid panoramas of Maremma, Pitigliano is a picturesque village still immersed in the Middle Ages. Breathtaking to behold and filled with an atmosphere of magic and mystique, Pitigliano is truly a gem of art and history and home to many precious and beautiful monuments and buildings.

The origins of the town are particularly ancient, dating back to the period of the Roman Empire, when two boys, Petilio and Celiano, ran away from Rome and, according to legend, began a primitive city. Today this city is filled with symbols of its ancient past, from the Etruscans to the Middle Ages to the Renaissances, beautifully preserved in such monuments as the ancient Vie Cave roads and the Necropolises, as well as the many extraordinary churches and monuments.

Amongst the most striking monuments in Pitigliano is the Monument to the ‘Progenie Ursinea,’ a massive marble statue of the Araldico Bear, built to celebrate the union between the Aldobrandeschi and Orsini families. Other beautiful pieces in the town include the Duomo of St Peter and Paul, the Church of St Rocco, the Church of St Maria, the Hebrew Synagogue and the Orsini Palazzo.
