Sovana

Immersed in the beautiful scenery of the Area del Tufo, Sovana is a small but ancient village. Absolutely wonderful and very distinctive, the town is one of the most important and unique centres in all of Tuscany. Even the countryside which surrounds Sovana is celebrated for its charm, hiding huge necropolis, graves and streets, built centuries ago by the Etruscans.

Sovana is not only famous at a local level, but is also celebrated internationally for its history and immense beauty. Branded ‘one of the most beautiful villages in Italy,’ Sovana boasts some of the most charming and extraordinary monuments, buildings and architecture in all of Tuscany.

An place of great religious significance in the past, Sovana has many beautifully churches including the Church of Santa Maria, which dates back to 1200 and is home to some beautiful eighth century works of art, the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul, dating back to the eleventh century, and the Church of St Mamiliano, probably one of the oldest buildings in the town.

As well as striking churches, Sovana is also blessed with many splendid and interesting buildings and monuments. The Palazzo del Pretorio, built in the thirteenth century, is one of them, as are the Palazzo dell’Archivio, dating back to the Middle Ages, the Christmas Home of Ildebrando Suana, better known as Pope Gragorio VII, and finally the Palazzo della Loggia del Capitano, embellished by an imposing emblem which represents the Medici family.
